For most travellers, reading is a natural complement to any trip. Not only can a good book provide context, relevance, and insight into a new destination, it can add colour and meaning to your travels… a literary soundtrack of your journey, if you will.

It used to be that for a trip lasting more than a few days, the reader’s experience would go like this: pack a carefully selected novel; finish said novel (whether you especially loved it or not); exchange it at a guesthouse or local bookshop for a new book (whether you particularly wanted to read it or not); repeat for as long as your journey lasts.

While there is an element of mystery and wonder about trading in books that others have carried through their travels – who last read this? Where were they from? Where were they going? – there’s always a chance that your only reading option is a 950-page military action novel that might not have been your top choice back home.

And while tactile books have a special place in the hearts of many readers, the introduction of the eReader has brought convenience, opportunity and selection to readers around the globe.?Here are five ways eReaders are improving the reading experience for the book-loving traveller:

1. Read what you want, where you want.

If you’re going on a two- or three-week adventure that takes you to a range of locations – cities, beaches, villages, and more – then you may want your literary companion to change with your environment: light reading for relaxing on the sand, historical fiction for the city tour, and inspirational memoirs for evenings in remote villages. With an eReader, different types of reading material is at your fingertips, and you can flip from book to book as easily as, well, flipping a page!

2. Choose your guidebook.

There’s no denying that a good guidebook is an essential accessory for any type of travel. The thing is, there are so many great ones out there that it’s hard to limit your choice to just one. And most guidebooks have their specialty, be it backpacker destinations, cultural landmarks, dining out or nightlife. Rather than lug a few great guides with you, you can load them onto your eReader and pick and choose the one that’s best for the moment. Convenience opens the door to learning experiences like never before.

3. Finish one, start another.

If you count on spending a day at the beach or a rainy evening in a pub with a good book, there’s nothing worse than finishing it and being left without a backup. With an eReader, you can easily buy or access your next book from anywhere with a wifi signal and enjoy your time as planned.

4. React to recommendations.

One of the great parts of travelling is sharing experiences, stories, and recommendations with your fellow travellers. Get the book your new roommate is reading and find some new common ground, or read more about the amazing place you just heard about from a new friend at dinner. An eReader lets you stay current with new books, dig up old classics, and access the great suggestions that come your way.

5. Save your back.

And what if you did want to read that 950-page military action book that you traded for along the road? Add that to the printed guidebooks and phrasebooks you may have brought with you from home and all of a sudden you’re carrying about ten pounds of paper on your back (or over your shoulder). Save your luggage room for treasures and gifts and carry an eReader – in your pocket or purse – instead.

Travellers are curious by nature, interested and engaged with the world. Reading is another way to access the wonders of the planet. Now, the books you want to read are at your fingertips, allowing you to curate your epic journey or inspiring you to learn about where you are (or where you want to go next).
